How We Do It
Learning outside of the regular school setting is important to us. To give students opportunities to expand and apply their learning, extracurricular activities and experiences are meaningfully integrated into the freshman and sophomore teams. Additionally, AIS regularly hosts and plans other events such as the annual CHS CultureFest.
Each year, the AIS serves as the coordinator of Carrboro High School’s annual CultureFest. This year, our event will be held during the Fall CHS Openhouse. Mark your calendars now and stay tuned for more details! AIS students are expected to participate in a variety of ways (performance, cultural display, etc.), and more information will be provided in advance of the event through their AIS courses and list-serv.
CHS French Exchange
Carrboro High School has offered an exchange program to students of French for over a decade. This past year, our students went to France for two full weeks. Students were able to go to classes at the local High School and participate in amazing activities to learn about the region and the cultural differences.
Carrboro has opened the program to all AIS students and families, even those who are not enrolled in French classes. Your family will have the opportunity to host a junior French student. Activities are planned for them every day and they will need to come to school with your child in the morning. They will then go with their group to participate in the activities planned for them. During the weekend, they will be with your family. Teachers are always reachable during the weekend, if needed.
Model UN Conferences
Each year, the AIS 10th Grade classes have the opportunity to travel to Washington, DC. This trip will include participation in a Model UN Conference as well as visits to globally-focused sites. Preparation, research and writing components are required regardless of attendance at the conference itself. This work is completed as a part of their Civics and English courses leading up to the trip. Site visits to the United States Institute for Peace and other Washington DC attractions are also incorporated into the visit. Partial and full scholarships are available in order to ensure that all students have an opportunity to participate.
International Travel
During their Junior and/or Senior years, students are strongly encouraged to participate in at least one of the many international trips offered by various groups at CHS. In the past, students have visited the Dominican Republic, China, Ecuador, Spain, France, Nicaragua, and others. This year, AIS students will be traveling to Peru during Spring Break 2025. These trips vary year to year, as do their objectives. Some are focused more on service learning, while others are more tour/sightseeing based. Please see the sponsors of the trips for more information.
