Dr. Helena Thomas

Greetings, Carrboro High School Community!  I am elated and honored to serve as principal of Carrboro High, a community school committed to serving its students, families and creating a learning environment where students thrive academically and socially.

I am a North Carolina native, born and raised in New Bern, North Carolina. My passion for education started when I was young, as I knew I wanted to be a teacher from an early age. I was in the Teacher Cadet program in high school and a NC Teaching Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I earned a bachelor's degree in Middle Grades Education. I also earned a master's degree in Higher Education Administration from NC State University and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Georgia.

This school year will be my eighth year in school leadership and my fifteenth year in education. My school leadership journey started in the Atlanta metropolitan area, where I was a high school assistant principal for five years with Atlanta and Gwinnett County Public Schools. Before coming to Carrboro High, I was a high school principal in the Alamance-Burlington School System for two years. However, I spent my entire teaching career in North Carolina, teaching eighth-grade mathematics with Asheboro City and Guilford County Schools.

I believe that all students deserve access to rigorous, relevant, and engaging learning experiences designed to meet their unique needs, preparing them to live choice-filled lives. This happens when a school and families work together toward a shared vision that puts students first. I look forward to partnering with Carrboro's parents, community members, and staff to continue Carrboro High's success.

When not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, reading, playing tennis, and planning my next travel adventure.

¡Vamos, Jaguars!

¡Saludos a todos!

It is my privilege and honor to serve the Carrboro High School community as the Associate Principal. As AsP, one of my main responsibilities is the oversight of the Newcomer Program.

I am the son of two Mexican immigrants. My parents, who recently retired, live in Veracruz, while the rest of my family reside in the mountains of Western North Carolina. After high school, I went to Lenoir-Rhyne University (Go Bears!) as a North Carolina Teaching Fellow. I graduated with a B.A. in Elementary Education with a Spanish minor. After college, I began working for Newton-Conover City Schools. My previous titles include 6th grade ELA/Social Studies teacher, Administrative Intern, and an Elementary Dual Language teacher. While teaching I obtained two master’s degrees- Online Teaching & Instructional Design (Lenoir-Rhyne University) and Educational Leadership (High Point University). I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership degree at UNC-Greensboro (Go Spartans!).

When not at Carrboro or with my nose in a book, one can find me walking down Franklin Street, searching for my next favorite restaurant, at Chapel Hill Crossfit, or perhaps taking a nap. I look forward to the school year ahead! Go Jags!

Ms. Marlene Bennett

Greetings Jaguar Community!

It is with gratitude and enthusiasm that I serve as the Assistant Principal at Carrboro High School! What an honor to be a Jaguar!

I am a native of Brooklyn, New York but have called North Carolina my home for several years. I attended The University of North Carolina at Greensboro where I obtained both my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education (K-6) and Masters degree in Teacher Education with a focus in Literacy Coaching. I also obtained a Post Masters Certificate in School Administration from UNCG. Go Spartans! I am also a licensed Reading Specialist (K-12). Needless to say, reading is my passion and I enjoy helping others find the same joy in reading. In my free time, I enjoy vacationing with my family, bowling, shopping, and relaxing.

This year marks my tenth year in education. My dedication and commitment to education have afforded me the opportunity to serve as an Elementary and Middle School teacher, a high school Instructional Coach, and currently a high school administrator. In these roles, I have led several initiatives that have supported student achievement, staff development, and community engagement.

I am ecstatic about joining a team where consistency, collaboration, and connections are the focus and student achievement is a priority.
